Cancer Ravished His Body
by Paul Leaman

As I gazed upon my brother
I scarce could discern his face.
His countenance drawn and hollow.
Like a dead man lay in his place.

The cancer ravished his body
As here in hospital he lay.
Then I called his name softly,
As I looked on in dismay.

He awoke with eyes of terror,
They, darting this way and that.
Then turning and looking our way
As by his bed we sat.

A smile lit up his face
And he weakly called our names.
I was glad he knew who we were,
But my heart, heavy all the same.

Oh the sorrow to see a loved one,
Seized with such pain and fear.
Praying that God will soon take him,
And yet, so wanting him here.
