I Wish I Could Have Known Me
by Claytia Doran

I wish I could have known me,
When I was just a child.
I think I would have liked the girl
Who seemed so meek and mild ...

The girl who feared rejection,
Yet had the sweetest spirit;
The one who would have been herself,
If only she didn't fear it.

We would have been the best of friends.
I would pull her out of her shell.
If I knew, then, what I know now,
I would have always said, "Oh, well!"

I would tell her, "You'll be pretty
Some day, when you are grown.
Don't worry about freckles or rejection.
Worry about the love you've shown."

Yes, I wish I would have known me
When I was a little girl.
Then I could have told myself,
"In a room of gems, you're a pearl!"
